IN FIVE EASY PIECES WITH TAKE 5 GET THE BEST OF THE JAPAN TIMES Japanese champion Takefumi Sakata beat interim champion Roberto Vasquez of Panama on a unanimous decision to successfully defend his WBA flyweight title on Sunday. Sakata gradually gained control as the 12-rounder wore on and was never really in danger of losing the unification bout at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum. “I couldn’t accept there being another champion at the same weight category,” said Sakata. “I’d heard it’s really tough trying to defend your title for the first time so I am pleased I won.” Sakata improved his record to 31-4-1 with 15 knockouts while Vasquez dropped to 24-2 with 17 KOs.
